Are You a Conservative or Liberal?
Not sure where you fit on the political spectrum? If not, you are likely somewhere close to the center. Anecdotal evidence suggests that most people who are uncertain of their political leanings 1) find politics distasteful and 2) when defining their own belief system align more closely with conservatism. No one can honestly dispute that a lot of miserable things have been done in politics by both Republicans and Democrats. A lot really is done that is distasteful. (That’s partly why I associate myself with conservatism first and more distantly with the Republican Party).
When moving past political parties, though, it is really important to do some introspection and understand what your values, priorities and beliefs are. This will always serve you well as you look at issues and struggle to decide what side you will align with.
Below is a list of issues and philosophies as viewed by liberals and conservatives. With some, you will readily see yourself on either the left or the right. With others, you may be unsure and find yourself somewhere between the two sides. That is to be expected. Nearly everyone is a mix of left and right, at least to some degree.
So, take a moment and read through the issues/philosophies and see where you land: left, right or somewhere closer to the middle.
(Looks too long? Take the critically acclaimed “World’s Smallest Political Quiz”. Left and right say good things about its accuracy.)

Health care is best run and regulated by the federal government, which should guarantee coverage for every citizen. |
US health care is expensive and inefficient, but it is the best in the world. Government management would severely hurt health care quality and availability. |
The US should surrender its sovereignty to international law and international courts. |
As a sovereign nation, we determine our laws and reject any attempts to surrender that sovereignty. We should find other means in working well with the international community. |
The courts are an effective last resort when social injustices cannot be resolved through the representative legislatures or the initiative process. |
US courts have become too political. All too often the courts overreach their authority to interpret law and impose the liberal agenda from the judicial bench. |
Abortion is the right of every woman. The right to control her body trumps the right of a human fetus, even if this results in the killing of the fetus. |
Abortion is the voluntary destruction of human life, murder. It should never be allowed, except in the direst of circumstances. |
The death penalty is a violation of human rights and should never be permitted. |
The death penalty is appropriate in select cases. |
Taxes, even high taxes, are critical to support the needs of the government and to achieve economic equality in society. The rich should be taxed at a higher rate since they can afford it. |
Taxation dampens the economy, hurts business, hurts consumers even more, and results in loss of jobs. Taxes should be kept as low as possible and should be spread evenly. |
The government is entitled to all the taxes from our income. If there is anything left over, we should be grateful to the government. |
Taxes are the part of one’s income that the government forcibly takes from its citizens. Those funds are often squandered, mishandled, and used in ways that the country would find inappropriate. |
The government should do more to solve the nation’s problems, even if it means higher taxes. |
The government is really the last entity that should try to solve most of the nation’s problems. Government usually makes matters worse. |
The government should celebrate and encourage cultural and ethnic diversity, even if it means the loss of a consistent national identity. |
America should continue as an ethnic melting pot in which cultural and ethnic distinctions are deemphasized or even blurred. |
Big government is absolutely necessary to achieve important social goals. |
Big government is hugely inefficient and is a burden on the citizenry. |
The mainstream media is generally fair, accurate, and balanced. |

The constitution requires a strict separation of church and state and we should always prevent efforts to bring religion into the public forum. |
The constitution restricts the government from establishing a state religion, but it does not call for a strict separation of church and state. Our Judeo-Christian roots should not be denied. |
Prayer should never be allowed at school. |
Prayer at school should be allowed, though not imposed. |

The government should ensure all of the elderly are adequately provided for through programs like Social Security and Medicare. |
People should be responsible for their own retirement. Social Security should be privatized. If retirees fall into poverty, private organizations should be empowered to provide humanitarian aid. |
Government welfare is a moral responsibility, requiring the government to care for the most vulnerable among us. |
The federal and state welfare programs have created a welfare class and done much more harm than good. Such efforts are best left to private humanitarian groups. |
The government has a moral obligation to address and solve societal concerns. We cannot depend on private organizations with differing (unacceptable) agendas and motivations to do so. |
Addressing societal concerns (poverty, health, education, etc.) is best addressed by private sector organizations. They are more efficient and produce better results. The government should encourage and empower these organizations. |
America is no better than other countries. In fact, in many ways we should be ashamed of our history and behavior as a nation. |
America is a truly exceptional phenomenon in world history. While less than perfect, we are an example to the world for freedom, fairness, equality, opportunity, and much more. |
Individualism is simply another word for selfish. We should look to the government to even out inequities and give everyone a leg up. The government should do what it can to help us all be happy and successful. |
The pursuit of happiness and success is a person’s own responsibility. Rugged individualism creates a stronger and better society. |
Militarism is threatening to world peace and stability. While we need to have a military, building a very powerful military is morally wrong. |
There is no greater obligation for the federal government than to protect us from foreign threats. To that end, it should maintain the best and strongest military machine in the world. |
If government is to fulfill its role and obligation to the people, it must be a large and far-reaching organization. |
Power corrupts. People with government power are easily corrupted. Knowing this, we should strive for a limited national government. |
Good and evil are relative. What is just and unjust must be tailored to the mores of a society. Government defines and grants our rights. |
There is a higher power that defines morality. Good and evil, justice and injustice, rights and responsibilities are immovable and concrete. |
