How to Get Involved
There are numerous ways for you to get involved and make a difference. Winning in politics depends heavily on grassroot efforts. When you choose to get involved, you become part of the solution and you will make a difference. Consider the time and skills you have, look at your interests and do something! Here are a few ideas you might consider.
- Vote! If you do nothing else, become well informed and vote. There is nothing more important to our democracy than to make your voice heard. If you haven’t registered to vote, there is no easier way than to register to vote online.
- Discover Your Passion. Find an issue that you feel passionate about and would like to continue learning about. This keeps you motivated to volunteer your time and energy to the issue.
- Get Educated. Read materials to learn about the subjects you want to get involved with. Increase your knowledge on the issues so you can speak intelligently about them and gain credibility.
- Join Forces. Get involved in a conservative activist group that represents your cause. These groups are always grateful to have like-minded people join their cause. You can exchange knowledge with others that have the same goals and coordinate efforts.
- Speak Out. In today’s world, speaking out on your issues is easier than ever. Make your voice heard and win the hearts and minds of your audience.
- Write letters to elected officials. Let them know your position on an issue and reinforce it with facts.
- Call conservative talk radio shows and share your ideas.
- Submit articles to local newspapers and online conservative magazines to get your views out.
- Be an active blogger on political and issue sites.
- Leave comments on web articles and others’ blogs.
- Donate to Good Causes. Donate money to think tanks, political action committees, activist organizations, and non-profits that share and promote your views. Your money, added to the contributions of others, really empowers these organizations to achieve their missions.
- Start an Online Campaign. Create an online activism campaign. Design a conservative website that provides resources to strengthen your point of view. Allow visitors to sign up for an e-newsletter. Send out email alerts to prompt others to take action on major legislative issues. Establish a conservative blog or chat room that motivates people to discuss the issues. This is an inexpensive way to network with others that share the same viewpoint.
- Talk to Friends and Family. Recruit others that share your passion on the same issues. Impart your knowledge and experience with them. Unite like-minded people to build greater numbers of involved activists to represent conservative issues.
- Participate in Caucuses. Political parties work from the ground up. Locally, caucuses meet to provide input and representatives to the county, state and national conventions. By choosing the delegates who will attend county and state conventions, caucus attendees set the stage for all election races and have more influence over public policy than actual voters. Caucuses are often poorly attended and your voice can carry a lot of weight. Increase your influence by seeking to lead your caucus or, better still, become a delegate. Delegates generally have direct access to candidates during an election season. Politicians actually get worried when the delegates are unhappy. Consider the following:
- Since fewer people participate in caucuses and conventions than in a general election, your vote carries more weight.
- Since party delegates tend to be more active in politics than the general population, they sometimes represent more extreme views. A higher general participation in party caucuses could mean that mainstream voters are better represented throughout the election process.
- Campaign for Initiatives and Candidates. There are many opportunities to participate. You can help do mailings, call voters, go door-to-door and more.
- Run for Office. If you have the drive, energy, passion and credentials, consider a run for public office.
